Neli, what does good interior design mean to you? How do you know that your project is a success?

When I see the happy faces of the clients and they come back for more projects. Also, when I am satisfied that I have done everything I can to make the most of the space. Designs do not come at once, instead it is a gradual process that needs time to grow. For me, good interior design is about fulfilling the client’s personality. The client plants the seeds of the design and it is up to you to help it grow and blossom to its full potential.

What would you say is your design philosophy? What inspires you?

Never stop evolving your designs as there is always something new to learn in every project and every space. My design philosophy would be to not always act on impulse but to take the time to make sure that the design blends together, is practical and lasting in a forever home for someone to cherish. I can see inspiration in anything in the world around me, our lives are so rich with experience and emotion but the ultimate inspiration comes from the clients’ lifestyles themselves.

You have been in interior design for 25 years, what are some of your proudest and most challenging memories from that time?

Every project has its unique challenges of course, a project is always evolving and you have to make sure that you adapt with it. One that sticks in my mind, and actually became one of my proudest moments, is designing the largest chandelier that I have ever come across - more than 20m in diameter. Designing every element to make sure that it all comes together in the large space and knowing what happened next really made it all worth it.

How do you feel that the design industry has changed in that time?

We are a lot more cognisant about sustainability in the field and how to ensure that our designs are flexible enough to stay fresh over time. This means that we are more conscious about how to make our clients’ lives easier long after the project has finished with smart technology so that it is easier to manage and better for the planet.

What do you see for the future of design? What are you planning next?

I believe that the client will become more and more at the centre of designing, with newer technologies making design ever more personalised and accessible. As part of this, the personal, creative touch from a designer will come to the forefront as the direct relationship between a client and a designer is prioritised. Personally, I want to build on this approach and there are some fascinating projects down the pipeline that I cannot wait to see how it all comes together.
